Graffiti! Sight impaired artists meet Street Artist Squirl-Art

Graffiti? In Rochester Cathedral? With a Street Artist? How exciting!

Today was the first of 8 weeks of a brand new art adventure for us the KAB Medway Art Group. After planning, plotting and behind the scenes meetings we the volunteers: Wendy, Kate, Angie, Colette, Brian M, Maureen L and sight impaired artists Norman, Barbara, Ray, Karen, Chris and Brian P met at Sun Pier House, Chatham welcoming brand new sight impaired members Geoff, Kathleen, Joanna, Hanns, Susan, David with guide dogs Q and Scramble.

Our mission is to take part in the Medway Open Studio & Arts Festival 2014 with Rochester Cathedral as our inspiration. We’re aware of the ancient graffiti within the Cathedral and thought perhaps we could add our own! Enter Street Artist Squirl-Art aka Greg Stobbs.

Greg discussed his art and exciting path to where he is now and why a ‘tag’ can be useful! It was great to hear about his early street adventures and there’s a good reason that he’s know as Squirl. This gave us ideas for midnight tagging sprees across Medway, well who’d believe it was us? Anyway first things first, before styling our own personal tags we needed to know more how to create  them. Greg took us through the graffiti alphabet and our tags started to take shape.
