KAB Medway: Time with Rikard Österlund

Hello! We’ve been rather quiet here lately at the KAB Medway Art HQ, after winning our Epic Award last year and our successful exhibition at the Royal Engineers Museum we’ve taken some time out to help the KAB Gravesend Art Group establish themselves. However, we’ve been busy planning for an exciting new project with the Guildhall Museum and we have kept in touch with our friends. One such talented friend is photographer Rikard Österlund. Rikard recently met us at the Sun Pier House Gallery to tell us about his exhibition ‘Self Portraits & Other Scenes’. So who better to explain our morning with Rikard, other than Rikard himself …

“Thank you so much for arranging for the KAB group to come and see the exhibition today! It was so nice to meet everyone and a privilege to hear their reaction to the images. It was particularly beautiful to listen to the partially sighted ladies explaining the images to their friend who has no sight. The way they described the images and talked about what was in them was amazing – it is as if they see more than most people with perfect vision and were able to weave stories around what they saw too! My favourite story was the one you told me about – the image of the ‘girl on the Rialto Bridge’ – who was described as looking like a witch, a theory which was then confirmed when they moved onto the next image of a black cat. That was news to me and I absolutely love it!

What we had to say…

“So unexpected having seen Rikard’s work on his website. So refreshing to see personal work, especially like the old processes.” Ray

“Some of the images make my brain feel uncomfortable. Particularly the two faces, the use of shadows and blackness is excellent and almost sinister. Really good. Well done Rikard.” Chris

“Amazing. Amazing. Captivating. Thought provoking. Wonderful shadows on smoke making interesting shapes. Mind bogglingly beautiful. Well presented. Well done.” Cathy

Thank you very much Rikard and Zara for meeting us and sharing your work, it was an absolute pleasure to hear so much more about you!

‘Self Portraits & Other Scenes’ is on show at The Gallery, Sun Pier House, Chatham until 4th June 2016.
